Back to Church Sunday

Back to Church Sunday is about inviting back to church those who used to attend, and ensuring that everyone who visits his or her local church will be warmly welcomed. Back to Church Sunday started in 2004 in Manchester, England, and is now one of the largest invitational church initiatives in the world.

The Diocese of Toronto has participated in this program since 2009. As a result, about 8,000 people have accepted an invitation to come to church and about 800 people have become engaged in the life of the Christian community.

Parishes in the Diocese of Toronto are encouraged to participate in this simple effort to reach out to people who might be interested in connecting again with church. The 2014 Back to Church Sunday is on Sept. 28. Back to Church Sunday materials such as invitations and posters can be purchased through Augsburg Fortress and shipped directly to parishes. Pre-orders are due by June 30.

Seasons of Invitation

Some parishes are now setting aside a number of Sundays during the year to focus on what is being called ‘seasons of invitation.’ In addition to Back to Church Sunday in September, these parishes are encouraging special invitations for Remembrance Day, Christmas Carol Service, Christmas Eve, Easter, Pentecost and others. Like Back to Church Sunday, these invitational initiatives offer the possibility of helping people on their spiritual journey.

To help parishes with seasons of invitation, the Diocese’s Spirit of Invitation group has prepared a series of posters and postcards that can be used for any Sunday in the year when your parish wants to invite people (including Back to Church Sunday). They can be downloaded on the Spirit of Invitation website and printed or used online on your website or Facebook pages.
