Synod Forums

Episcopal areas will hold Synod Forums to prepare for the next Regular Session of Synod scheduled for November 13 and 14, 2015.

Dates and Locations

Synod Forums have been scheduled over two dates, covering the entire Diocese with one session in the morning and one session in the afternoon on each day. You may select whichever date/venue is most convenient for you.

The dates of the Synod Forums are as follows:

Saturday, April 11, 2015

Saturday, April 25, 2015

What are Synod Forums?

When needed, Synod Forums are meetings held during the period of time between Regular Sessions of Synod. The format allows for a more diverse voice to be heard and a deeper discussion in a smaller forum on significant items on the Agenda for Synod.

How are Synod Forums different from Pre-Synod Meetings?

Episcopal areas always hold Pre-Synod meetings prior to Regular Sessions of Synod to prepare for Synod. Agenda items include: Orientation for new Synod Members, Priorities and Plans, the Assessment Rate, and elections for Diocesan Council. Attendance is important as this is the setting for Synod members to engage in discussion and debate items being brought before Synod for approval.

What is the focus of this year’s Synod Forums?

The focus of this year’s Synod Forums are to present the proposed revisions to The Constitution and Canons (namely, eliminating mandatory retirement and changes to Synod composition) and to provide an opportunity for Synod members to have their questions answered in a smaller setting. The intention is to provide a full and open process for obtaining quantitative and qualitative feedback on the proposed changes before they are presented to Diocesan Council for recommendation to Synod.

The Report of the Constitution and Canons Committee, explaining the proposed changes will be available and posted on this page after Diocesan Council’s meeting in February 2015.

Who is eligible to attend Synod Forums?

Synod Forms serve as an extension of Synod and all members of Synod are encouraged to attend. Additionally, the Forums are open to anyone interested in attending, such as churchwardens, treasurers and volunteers.

What happens between the Synod Forums and the Regular Session of Synod?
The Synod Forums are constituted as part of the Synodical process and are chaired by the Bishop or his/her designate. At the Forums business is conversational not legislative and, as such, votes are not binding. The feedback gathered at the Synod Forms will be collated, considered, and, if appropriate, incorporated in the Constitution and Canon Committee’s final report to Diocesan Council in May 2015.
