York-Credit Valley – Clergy Reviews

Over the next 12 months, all paid clergy and deacons will be asked to participate in one of three forms of review as follows:

Standard Review

The process for this will be the same as previously, though the form has been revised now includes a mix of “operational” and “strategic” questions. It is important for clergy to have this opportunity and direction to reflect. The aim of the process is to help them to understand:

  • how their assumptions influence their self-understanding and philosophy of ministry;
  • what they hold to be their key priorities in ministry;
  • why they do what they do;
  • why they do it in the way they do it.

Such self-awareness is important for so many reasons, not least because it is a good lead-in to learning to think and operate more strategically.

Each review will be about an hour long and may take place in parishes across the Area or the Diocesan Offices. It is our aim to set up blocks of reviews during July 2014 based in parishes to cover a larger number of reviews in a shorter period of time, though not all reviews will fit into this time-frame.

  • We will contact you to set up an appointment date and time
  • We will send you a Clergy Ministry Review Notes Form that requires you to reflect on your ministry. This process of your own reflection is a key part of the review process.
  • The form should be completed, electronically if possible, and returned to my office at least 10 days before your review.
  • As far as possible, please try to keep your response succinct – around 100-150 words should be plenty for most questions.
  • Your responses will form the basis of our conversation and will be placed on file following the review. If there are significant issues raised during the review that were not in your original notes, the Bishop may ask you to produce an amended version both for yourself and for his records.
  • A final copy of the notes will be placed in your Diocesan file.

(An adapted version of the form will be used with Deacons and Associates)

    Format for Standard and 270 Review (Clergy) - Word version for those who wish to type their responses and send them electronically (please use this if at all possible!)

270 Review

Bishop Poole will be asking around 12 to 15 parishes to participate in a revised 270 Review Process. This is part of a rolling process encompassing all parishes, which he will expect to apply over 3 to 4 years. As with the Standard Review, each review will be about an hour long and may take place in parishes across the Area or the Diocesan Offices, with blocks of reviews taking place in July.

  • We  will contact you to set up an appointment date and time.
  • We will send you the 270˚ Ministry Review – Parishioner Feedback Form, as well as the Clergy Ministry Review Notes Form used in the Standard Review to focus your own reflection on your ministry.
    • Your Rector’s Warden and People’s Warden are to receive two Parishioner Feedback forms each.
    • They should both personally complete a form.
    • They should each give one other form to a parishioner of their choice to fill out.
    • The final two Parishioner Feedback forms are for you to give to two parishioners of your choice for completion.
    • You should complete the Clergy Ministry Review Notes Form.
    • All forms should be returned directly by the respondent to my office no later than two weeks before the review.
  • At our meeting, the Bishop will bring a composite report of the comments and go through the responses with you.
  • The composite report will be placed, together with your own notes, in your Diocesan file.

“Early Days” Ministry Review

If you have been appointed Incumbent or Priest in Charge within the last 18 months, you will be asked to take part in an “Early Days” Ministry Review.

  • Bishop Poole will aim to carry out this review with you sometime between 12 and 18 months after your appointment.
  • We will contact you to set up a 1½ hour slot during which he will meet first with you for a ½ hour, then with the parish selection committee for a ½ hour and finally bring all together in a shared discussion for a further ½ hour.
  • Well in advance of the review, we will send a simple form to you for completion prior to our meeting and a similar form for completion by the parish selection committee who appointed you.
  • You should complete the Early Days Ministry Review Notes form for Incumbent/Priest in Charge.
  • Each member of the parish selection committee should individually complete the Early Days Ministry Review Notes form for Parish Leaders.
  • All forms should be returned directly by the respondent to my office no later than two weeks before the review
  • At your meeting, the Bishop will bring a composite report of the comments and, once he has met with the parish selection committee and you separately, will go through the responses with you together.
  • The composite report will be placed, together with your own notes, in your Diocesan file.
